Styling Colorful Statement Earrings

A step-by-step guide to styling colorful statement earrings.

Styling colorful statement earrings can be a little tricky. On one hand, you want to make a statement with your entire look. On the other hand, you don't want it to be so bold that it’s too much for the eyes to take in all at once. So, how do you master balancing bold colors throughout your look?

So I’m going to walk you through my process of styling these gorgeous hand-painted statement earrings by

My Melanin Crafts. What makes these earrings statement earrings is the size, colors, and mixture of solids and patterns that draw your attention. Not to mention, the color blocking technique used by the jewelry designer, Mone’t Davis-Kelsey. Here’s my step-by-step process for styling colorful statement earrings:

First, allow the earrings to remain the focus of the look.

A good way to do this is to let the earrings be the only item in your overall look that has multiple colors and patterns. This way the emphasis will be on the earrings, and they will be the central item that pulls everything else together.

Second, pull a couple colors from the statement earrings.

Choose the color of your clothing by pulling a couple colors from the earrings. Be mindful of how the colors you chose work together. In this look, I went with fuchsia and green. The reason I picked these colors is because they are complimentary colors. If you look at a color wheel, these colors are on opposite sides, which means they compliment each other. This is a great technique to use when you’re working with bold colors.

Third, use different textures.

Although you’re only using a couple colors from the earrings, you can make your look more interesting and lively by having multiple textures. Here I have the fuzzy soft texture in the top paired with the raised vertical lines in the skirt.

Next, balance your proportions.

Proportions deal with the overall shape of the look, so it’s good to balance them. Here the top is oversized, and there is no distinction between the sleeves--which gives it volume. To contrast the proportions of the top, I’ve matched it with a slim pencil skirt that has no volume at all.

Finally, add a complimentary accessory.

Colorful looks are fun and exciting, and your accessories can help keep that tone going. With this look, I’ve added a fun pair of sunglasses, which gives the look a little more attitude.

There’s no one way when it comes to styling your looks. This just happens to be the approach I took with this look. You can use this as a guide next time you’re styling a pair of colorful statement earrings.
